Ok, sounds neat. Now, add a few meters/dials/graphs to tell me how my house is running - just like the dashboard on my car: inside/outside temperature, how much electricity and natural gas my house is using, when the AC and heat are running, etc. And throw in a little security like when the grarage door goes up, when the mailman open the mail box, which window has been left open, or appliance left on after use. Now THEN you would have some useful information. It might even pay for itself in energy costs.

The Dashboard timer is set for three minutes. The screen saver timer is set for 10. When you move the mouse to bring down the screen saver, Dashboard remains. Sounds odd, but works fairly naturally.

Nice setup! Thanks for documenting this, it could prove useful in the future. One question: it seems that the machine has two modes that are kinda competing with each other - the "kiosk" mode and the "picture frame" mode - both would seem to do best if they are the "default mode" for the machine - what it reverts back to when no one's using the system. Or do you have it go to one first and then the other? Like go to kiosk after 5 minutes inactivity, picture frame after 30?
