I think some of the stuff that Sci-Fi network has been doing with Battlestar Galactica -- releasing an episode for free online, and releasing free audio commentaries for each episode in MP3 format -- are interesting, in that they're marketing attempts that are meant to distinctly appeal to the "alpha" fan, and [I assume] create trickle-down fandom from there.

Personally, I don't watch many TV shows on the TV anymore -- wrestling and some reality shows being about the only exception. Everything else, I download while it's airing. I'd far rather watch TV when /I/ want to watch TV, and since television ratings are determined by a limited number of households, of which I am not one of, I don't believe that I'm actually hurting the show's creators ... nobody KNOWS whether I'm watching 24 or not, so I may as well download it and watch it when I feel like it, instead of when the network says I should.

[Some people may point out a device known as a "VCR" to me, but I don't own one.]
